Snacks Score Big on Game Day
This Sunday, while millions of Americans tune in to watch football, millions more pounds of food will be devoured. Though it is the nation’s highest-rated sporting event, more people are likely to be eating during the game than actually watching it. The big game is the top snacking day of the year and one of the biggest overall eating days in the country, second only to Thanksgiving.
Football and food are star players in one of the nation’s most anticipated unofficial holidays. Would you have guessed that more parties are hosted annually for the big game than New Year’s Eve? As jersey-clad sports fans gather in front of the tube to cheer on their favorite team, tons of snacks (literally) are prepared to hold them over from one quarter to the next. By the time the championship has been won, many foods will have seen some of their highest consumption of the entire year.
Our Favorite Game Day Snacks
According to the Snack Food Association, we consume an average of 33 million pounds of salty and sweet snack foods during the big game. That includes 8.2 million pounds of tortilla chips, 4.3 million pounds of popcorn, and 11.2 million pounds of potato chips. Then of course, there are the dips, pizza pies, subs, and the ever-important game day favorite, chicken wings. Last year, the National Chicken Council projected that somewhere around 1.25 billion chicken wing portions would be consumed over game day weekend alone.
Whether you are a fan of the game, the commercials, the half-time show, or maybe even just a fan of the food, there is certainly no better way to enjoy Sunday’s football showdown than in good company with great snacks. What are you going to be serving at your game day party this year? If you’re short on ideas, try a few of our favorites!
