Information on food and nutrition is so widely available that it would be a shame not to take advantage of it. As a mom, I can no longer ignore the fact that white refined sugar is bad, especially when I know that there are so many safe, natural alternatives to it.

Banana bread is one of the favorite sweet treats in our house. The kids love it because of its taste, whereas I love banana bread for its simplicity of preparation. So, how do you make this quick bread healthier? Getting rid of the sugar is the first step to creating a healthy banana bread recipe. I have switched to stevia and I am very happy with the results.

Proceed to replace the white refined flour with whole wheat or gluten-free flour like coconut, almond, rice, buckwheat, cassava…Just visit a healthy food store nearby and ask for advice.

Once you have eliminated your two worst enemies, think about add-ins. Adding healthy ingredients to your banana bread is the easiest way to boost its nutritive value. I recommend seeds. To be more precise, chia seeds.

Why Use Chia Seeds in Your Banana Bread Recipes?

Even though tiny in size, chia seeds are enormous when it comes to nutrition. They are rich in protein, dietary fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, and vitamins.

Serving your kids with a slice of chia seed banana bread is the best way to start the day – this seed improves brain functions and boosts energy levels (not that they need an extra energy boost😊). Chia is good for moms as well: it makes the skin healthier and facilitates weight loss.

I am sure this part intrigued you. Is it possible to eat banana bread and lose weight? Seems like all our dreams have come true. Chia seeds can absorb ten times their weight in water. This way they slow digestion and keep you feel full for a longer period of time, reducing sugar cravings at the same time.

Moreover, due to the high zinc content, chia is perfect for those looking to build muscle mass. Zinc in chia seeds regulates appetite and energy expenditure, providing strength and endurance at the same time. Seems like I am running out of excuses to start exercising 😊

How to Incorporate Chia Seeds in Your Banana Bread Recipes

You can add two to three tablespoons of chia seeds in any banana bread recipe you make. My favorite recipe is the one for chocolate banana bread that calls for chia seeds on top of ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder. Cocoa powder is another ingredient you can consume guilt-free. It is a powerful antioxidant and a very efficient mood booster.

Besides in their original form, chia seeds can also be ground and used as a flour substitute in your banana bread recipes. All you need is a coffee grinder to turn the seeds into powder. Start with ¼ cup of chia powder, combined with a 3/4 cup of another type of flour into the batter and see how you like it.

Finally, chia can serve as a great substitute for chicken eggs. If you are vegan, allergic to eggs, or simply want to reduce the calorie count in your banana bread, simply combine a tablespoon of ground chia seeds with 3 tablespoons of water for each egg you are replacing in the recipe. Stir and place in the fridge for 15 minutes to set.

Bon appetite!
