1# Get Enough Sleep
The first step to a healthier you start with getting enough sleep. What is considered enough you ask? Well, according to many scientists 7 to 8 hours of sleep are enough for our bodies to rest and be ready for the following day. If you don’t get enough sleep you will be less productive, more tired, and with that keener on eating unhealthy snacks and meals. This leads us to another crucial step towards a healthier you: preparing your own food.
2# Prepare Your Own Food
With our hectic day-to-day schedules, more often than not we turn to pre-ready mixes, microwaved one dollar dishes and fast food. Yes, these are yummy and easily accessible, but I have to disappoint you: saying bye-bye to these unhealthy foods and hello to homemade food is maybe the most important step towards a healthier you!
Now, before you give up under the pretext that you don’t have the time to cook remember this: There are numerous recipes for healthy meals that can be made ahead of time, as well as those that will only take 30 minutes to prepare.
When preparing your own food, you have total control over what goes into the dish. Fruits, veggies, and healthy condiments like cinnamon should all make it into your recipes. Furthermore, you are given the freedom to change ingredients and make any recipe healthier than it already is (just think how delicious pancakes would be with almond milk). And one last thing, when you prepare your own food, you are able to reduce the size of your portions and thus avoid the temptation of devouring a whole plate.
Here are some recipe suggestions that are nothing short of delicious, and on top of it all, they are filled to the brim with protein. J
The old “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day” has not been around for so long in vain. Our bodies need the energy to seize the day after at least 8 hours of not consuming anything (ok, except if mid-night snacking is your thing :p)
Lunch is also VERY important, especially if you have a 9-5 job. Your body needs to know you haven’t forgotten all about it while trying to finish sending all those emails or get the pile of documents ready. For that reason, prepare your lunch ahead of time and take it with you.
Depending on whether you eat your dinner at 7 or at 9, you should be careful when preparing it. The body needs to have enough time to process the food you’ve given it before you go to bed. A veggie lasagna is a good idea as a dinner before bed, but a pork roast might not be :).
3# DO Eat “Bad” Food
As long as you don’t go overboard with it, feel free to eat your favorite candy from time to time. Being healthy is more than just having the perfect body. Yes, your physical state is important, but your psychological and spiritual health is equally as important. This means that you should not deprive yourselves of the foods you love, instead, make healthy eating the road to a happier you with occasional unhealthy detours :).
And here are our top 5 indulgences. Do remember though, that if you are to prepare these you might want to use some healthier swaps any chance you get. Say, use stevia instead of sugar, almond or coconut milk instead of a dairy product, and, change regular flours with nutty ones.
These incredibly rich, moist and chocolatey brownies have a secret ingredient: Cream cheese!
No dessert was is rich and creamy, so beat the pumpkin puree with 3 ounces of cream cheese, softened, to add an over-the-top richness to the pie. And if you love the flavor of maple with pumpkin, feel free to add a few drops of maple flavoring or a little maple syrup to the whipped topping.
You’ll love this special treat—a slice of cream pie that tastes like your favorite slice of cheesecake!
Time will move too slowly while you are waiting for these cookie pops to cool.
Turn a good cookie into a delight by adding a little chocolate. Be careful with these, though, they stick to baking sheets more than other cookies, and you might lose half the cookies when they stick on the sheet. Parchment paper is simple to use and ensures that these cookies just slide off the sheet.
4# Exercise and Spend Time in Nature
The good old saying “mens sana in corpore sano” (a healthy mind in a healthy body) has stuck around for ages for a reason. Don’t expect to be healthy and happy if your only physical activity includes opening the fridge to get a soda, or getting up to restart your Wi-Fi router.
Get up, go outside and run! Then, find exercises that fit your preferences and do them outdoors. Yes, the gym is a great place to get yourselves motivated, but exercising in nature is a whole different and rewarding experience.
5# Drink as Much Water as Possible
Needless to say, you will have to say bye-bye to sodas and carbonized drinks. But another thing you should consider doing is drinking a lot of water. The source of life, Adam’s ale, we all know water has been associated with healthy life (and is essential for our wellbeing) since the beginnings of mankind. And since there’s a difference between knowing something and actually doing it, knowing this fact is worth next to nothing. You can set a reminder to blink every several hours to be sure you are drinking enough of it, six glasses is the optimal amount of water you should be consuming (8 ounces each). Water will not only reduce your appetite, but it will also keep you hydrated.
Go ahead and implement these steps into your everyday routine. The sooner you do it, the sooner you will start feeling the benefits of a healthier lifestyle.
