How to Make Natural Apple Chips in a Dehydrator

Who doesn’t love eating apples? I know I do! And I love them even more when they’re dehydrated chunks of delicious goodness. Every season I get a lot of apples from my gardens and I am often at a loss about what I should do with them. Last year, I found the perfect answer to this question. I decided to make apple chips in my food dehydrator.

These apple chips are sprinkled with cinnamon to make them taste extra delicious in their dry form. And the best part is that you can make these in your own home instead of buying them from the store. When you make your own dried apples, you can be sure that there are no added chemicals or any harmful preservatives in the final product.

In case you or your family members are allergic to preservatives or chemicals, making your own dried apples is the best option for you. You can store these apples for eating later in airtight containers; they’ll keep for a few months. You can also freeze them in ziplock bags if you want to store them for a longer duration. I personally eat a whole batch of dried apples in a few weeks and my family loves to munch on them as a snack every now and then.

It took me a few tries to get the time and temperature right in my dehydrator but I was finally able to get the apple chips to taste dry yet crunchy as per my liking. After that day, I continued making these apple chips whenever I could get my hands on some spare apples. Today I am going to share with you a simple recipe that will help you make natural apple chips in your dehydrator in a jiffy.

These chips are one of the simplest things you can dry in a dehydrator. Plus, this is a great way to involve your kids or family members in making tasty dried apple chips that will fill your whole house with the lovely smell of cinnamon and apples. So let’s take it step by step and learn how we can make these apple chips in a dehydrator. Here are the things that you will need for making dehydrated apple chips:

1) Four fresh apples of your choice

2) One tablespoon cinnamon powder

3) One tablespoon sweetener of your choice

4) Lemon juice as needed

5) A sharp knife

6) Your trusted dehydrator

Recipe Directions

1) There are many different ways to cut apples for dehydrating. Some people like to cut the apples in thin half slices, others like rings and so on. Today, we are going to cut circular slices . First, cut the top and bottom of the apple and then chop off the slices in a circular shape. You can leave the cores in or remove them as per your choice, but do remove the seeds from the cores. Make sure all the slices are of uniform width. You can eyeball it to cut the apple slices 1/8”. The thinner the slices, the lesser time it will take for the apples to dry completely.

2) Soak the apple slices in a bowl of one part lemon water and three parts water as it will prevent the apples from browning when you put them in the dehydrator. You can skip this step if you don’t want your dried apples with a slight lemony taste.

3) Sprinkle cinnamon and sweetener of your choice on the apple slices till they’re coated properly. Cinnamon and apple are two flavors that are meant for each other and their combined flavors just do wonders for one’s mood.

4) Place the slices on the dehydrator trays. Make sure the slices do not overlap each other and there is ample space between them so they can dry properly. If you overload the dehydrator it might take more time for the apples to dry and the pieces might end up stuck to each other or the dehydrator trays. Keeping enough space between them allows hot air to pass through easily and dry the apple slices properly.

5) Turn the temperature to 135ºF and dehydrate the apples for 6-8 hours or till they’re as crunchy as you’d like them to be.

6) Once the apple slices have cooled down, store them in an airtight container so that they remain crisp for a longer period of time. You can also use the dried apples in a variety of dishes such as cakes, cookies, pies, and more.

Recipe Notes

Drying times for apple slices can depend on a lot of factors such as the humidity and temperature in your area. Remember, thickly sliced apples will take a longer time to dry . Depending on your dehydrator model, you might need to rotate the trays so that all trays get an equal amount of heat.
